A short session today

Today I played 15 songs for 56 minutes, with improvements in nine of them.

I'd ordered a book I can't get locally from Amazon yesterday on standard delivery, and while I was playing (and on headphones) I missed the postman knocking with the delivery. So I guess I'm going to have to pay them a visit first thing tomorrow.

A few days sessions merged into one blog

I'm going to be combining a few days practice into this entry, I'm busy working through all of the songs I've played to get the streak and percentage accuracy figures.

Over the past two days, I've played the 39 songs I've been learning for a playing time of around 2 hours 31 minutes. 32 of them I managed to improve on either the score, the streak or the percentage accuracy.

This blog should have been posted yesterday, but I was busy putting a new hard disk into my macbook (it now has 1Tb of storage), and I'm still going through the throes of getting my development environment back together.

Mixing Desk

I've finally managed to get to record the output from the mixing desk, but have a high pitched buzz when the USB is connected that I need to find out where it's coming from and fix it.

I also worked out why the sound from the PS wasn't very clear, I am using a guitar amp and only had one channel audio output set up. As the amp I'm using has two guitar inputs, I realised that I can use both to hear what I'm playing.

I worked out why the sound sometimes came in muffled,  and that is because I was using a stereo 1/4" adaptor to feed both the left and right channels into the desk. I'm now using a pair of mono phono to 1/4" jack adaptors into the desk and the sound it very clear now.

Next steps are to record the results of a session, and will see how well audacity copes with a long file. I will need to remove the silences and tuning sections between the actual playing.

Distracted by Dr Who

Today I played 21 songs for around 1 hours 16 minutes. I was distracted by watching part of a Dr Who episode before booting the game.

I'm very happy with how I played, and scored better than I did yesterday for all songs, and bettered my previous best on the majority of the songs too.

Dawn of the Chorded

I had three goes at this game, and out of the two I noted my score for got 55000 for #9 on the leader board, and 58600 for #10 on the leader board. I didn't note the middle one as I was talking to the girlfriend and got distracted.

Chord Diagrams

I'd like to find a simple way of creating chord diagrams, so that I can get the change to learn and practice new chords that are thrown at me during the game.

Mixing Desk

I've no idea why I couldn't get my mixing desk working with the Playstation last time, but I have got it working today.

I've connected the usb adaptor to the Direct Out connection and the guitar to the normal input jack on the board.

The sound is from the phono connectors connected via a phono to 1/4" adaptor. 

This means three things:

• I can give the world some peace and listen to what I'm playing via the headphones
• When my son is round we can use an amplifier and both listen to what we're playing (or even have separate headphones to listen to just what we're playing with the output from the playstation
• I will be able to record what I've been playing and share it with the world.

The first point will be a relief to the world (and my girlfriend when she's trying to have a lie in).

The other two not so much :-S

The next step would be to get some way of recording the video and me playing so I can annoy the world via youtube.

Sunday morning blues. Apart from no Blues were played.

Today I played 18 songs for around 1 hours 08 minutes, and also played some of the Guitarcade games.

Although I wasn't that happy about how I played today, I must have done something right as I did improve with eight of them.

Go With The Flow is getting closer to 100,000 and not getting the notes on screen for a performance, but I can't say that I know where the chord changes are due just yet. Possibly by the time I get Islands and Gobbledigook sorted I might have managed to learn them.

No real progress. Not a shocker.

Today I played 12 songs for around 40 minutes, and for a change I played most of them standing up.

I spend some time doing the riff repeater exercises for Burnished today, which has helped slightly with my scores, although I can't reliably play the chorus part yet.

I've not played as much this week as I'd have liked, but did have several crashes while playing through the week that stopped me - and I've been suffering from a lack on enthusiasm for doing most things, not just playing the guitar.

None of the songs were wonderfully well played, even by my low standards. Must do better next week, not helped that I'm on a late shift.

Damn crashes

Today I played 5 songs for around 14 minutes. Gave up playing as the PS crashed as I was about to play Gobbledigook for a second time, then crashed again as I was wanting to play Unnatural Selection.

What do I think of the new songs? To be honest I am totally unsure about any of them.

I was planning on also playing Unnatural Selection, Use Somebody, Breed, Unshined, In Bloom, Well Ok Honey, Number Thirteen, Song 2, High and Dry and Go With The Flow. Except the playstation crashed for the second time in a row. I have other things I want to do, so have stopped for the night.

I'll be having another go tomorrow night, and will need to wait while the playstation checks it's disk for errors.

I did smile after seeing that the message you get when you unlock a new venue is "You've been invited to play at..."

The Palace Hall

Today I played 19 songs for around 1 hours 24 minutes and attempted the Palace Hall event. To warm up a little, I played on the ScaleRunner minigame (for the A scale), and also the Harmonically Challenged until I managed to get onto the leader board. I also had a few attempts at the Harmonic Technique Challenge, and managed to get the Silver medal with 34712 points.

With the exception of A More Perfect Union, I was well past the qualifiers for all of the songs on this list, so decided to run through the performance. I forgot to write down the total number of points I earned for this performance.

I was pleased with my attempt at High and Dry getting 52021 points, and even more pleased with I Miss You getting 25921 points, which is 9000 points better than my previous attempts at this song.

I did get to play an encore with Plug In Baby by Muse. I do love the way that an encore performance often seems to be a song that has never been played before.

The Epicentre

The Epicentre is my next venue with Burnished by White Denim, Gobbledook by Sigur Rós and Islands by the xx. For a change, I don't think that I've heard of any of the songs in this list (from listening to the preview that Rocksmith gives).

Gobledigook has the highest qualification score so I suspect this might be the most challenging song in this set to play.

The game allows you to add songs to a set to get a better Rocksmith score, so I am tempted to add a couple of my higher scoring songs (like Go With The Flow by Queens of the Stone Age) but this is to see if I can get another double encore to get another song unlocked.

Today I played 16 songs for around 51 minutes, focussing on some of the songs that have lower scores. It's been one of my Saturday's in at work and I have a party tonight to go to followed by the Remembrance Day parade.

I'm tweaking the calculation for which songs need more practice, and am going to target songs that are least well played.

Work gets in the way

Today I played 23 songs for around ninety minutes and was trialling the new calculations for working out which songs I should be practicing.

I have far too much on at the moment, with two music related online courses and wanting to take part in NaNoWriMo.  I am going to have to work out which ones I need to keep up, as I don't really have the time to do all of these as well as practicing using Rocksmith.

Next weekend is going to be chaotic for me, with working Saturday as well as a party on Saturday night to go to and the Remembrance Sunday service to attend with the Scout Group, so I doubt I'm going to get much played on the Saturday.

This has totally came to a stop, I need to find some way of getting an additional 8-10 hours a day in order to get everything I want to do completed. If only work didn't get in the way, but I need money for luxuries like food.

NaNoWriMo

At the time of writing this blog, I have only written something like 100 words. This means to complete the challenge I need to come up with an average of 1783 words per day in order to reach the 50,000 words target by the end of the month.

Rocksmith: What to play next?

I am still refining my method of working out which song I should be playing next.

At the moment I am working out how recently a song has been played, and using that as a base score. 

I am trying to come up with a way of elegantly using how well a song has been played to work out what should have priority.

I am looking at comparing the last score with the best score, and songs that are further away from the best score need to be pushed higher up in the list of songs to play.

Songs that are in the latest set to play need to be pushed to the top of the list.

A Saturday Morning "Special"

Now that caught your interest, unless you like reading random comments about a guy learning to play the guitar using the Rocksmith game stop reading now and go find something more interesting to read.

I've spent a couple of hours reviewing my spreadsheet tracking the scores, and have redone the method I'm choosing which songs to practice, so that songs I haven't played in a while will get the chance to be played a little more often.

Today I played 20 songs for around 1 hour 19 minutes, I played some of the songs I skipped yesterday twice. I've also fixed a couple of bugs in the spreadsheet that might have been causing me not to note all of the times I've been playing. Oops.

Over the past week I've practiced the same songs, and have managed to get an improvement over the week on thirteen of them.

I have managed to get one of the harmonics on one of the current set list songs, and need to use the guitarcade practice games to work on that. I might have a session just focussing on the current set and the games.

Song 2 by Blur: Scored 76865 over the week I kept around the same sort of scores, so possibly need to focus on using the riff accelerator's to see if I can improve.

Where is My Mind? by Pixies: Beaten previous high score of 64285 with 66410.  I started the week with a score of 59513 and am quite pleased with the improvement but some of the riff's need a significant amount of work - I can't get my eyes and fingers co-ordinated well enough.

Surf Hell by Little Barrie: Beaten previous high score of 39381 with 40016. I improved by around 8000 points, and am struggling to get some of the notes in so still some work needed.

In Bloom by Nirvana: Scored 43782. At the end of the week I was around 3000 points up but did hit 49153 points on Wednesday's session. Ho hum.

When I'm with You by Best Coast: Scored 33158. No real improvement on this song, but not losing ground.

Well OK Honey by Jenny O: Scored 31978. I've dropped slightly with this one, and it's mainly getting the picking around the D chord right.

Unnatural Selection by Muse: Scored 28689. A slight improvement but nothing much to comment about.

Play with Fire by The Rolling Stones: Scored 29574. I've fallen back with this one, and another song that needs the riff repeater treatment. In the week I did get a new high score but messed up today (and I did notice my mind wandering while I was playing this song).

Boys Don't Cry by The Cure: Scored 29508. A massive fall in this song today.

Me and the Bean by Spoon: Scored 34161. Massively messed up with this through the week, so much that I am wondering how I managed to get over 50,000 points.

All of these songs I've improved my scores over the week, so am rather chuffed with that. I musn't forget that I haven't played any of them before about a week ago, so part of that is getting a little more familiar with the songs I suspect.
