What is Rocksmith?
Rocksmith is a game for PS3, PC and XBox that uses a real electric guitar as a controller. To earn points you need to play the correct notes and chords for a song.As you get better at playing, the game automatically increases the difficulty and this happens while you're playing. You'll often hear me complain about adding something that I've not played before, and you only get a few seconds to work out what to play.
If you make too many mistakes as you are playing, the difficulty level is reduced so that you can always manage to complete the song. This is unlike the Guitar Hero game that I sometimes play, where if you don't play it right it's game over.
As you earn points on the game you get items unlocked, for example guitars, amplifiers, effects and games.
You get a set of songs to play to a certain standard (the qualifier), and when you reach the standard for all of the songs on a set then you get to play them for a virtual audience. Earn enough points and you can gain an encore or a double encore.
How am I doing?
To be honest, I can't tell, but I am slowly improving on what I can play, but really need to try to make at least half an hour a day to play at least a few songs.
To get my fingers, brain and eyes co-ordinated I have started playing some of the songs that I have already played before attempting the songs on the set list.
Today I played Where is my mind, Surf Hell, Unnatural Selection, Vasoline, Angela and Higher Ground as my practice songs, followed by the songs in the 365 Brannen and The Third Street Lounge which are the two gigs I had to complete.
I managed to improve on Well Ok Honey enough to qualify for the 365 Brannen event, and earned 179,598 rsp and an encore of I Want Some More by Dan Auerbach. I didn't do as well as I would have liked with most of the songs in the set, but did well enough with Song 2 to get the encore.
At the moment I am keeping track of my scores using a spreadsheet, and am designing a web application that will help me to keep track of my progress.
